Just 4 Kids

At Aesthetic Image Dental Dr. DiPiero & Dr. Murphy believe every child should be excited about coming to the dentist. Rest assure that your children are in the best dental hands from when they begin to speak to when you see them off to college.   We encourage a relaxing dental environment for children and are equipped to handle most children with the option for nitrous oxide if needed.  We suggest that your child start being seen by a Dentist between the ages of 2 and 4.  Most children entering kindergarten are required to have a thorough dental examination before they start.  Check out our video section to view what your child's first visit will entail. If a child is cavity free they will get to choose an item from our treasure chest.  On this page we have included some commonly asked questions, downloadable coloring pages, and a downloadable brushing chart.  Please call our office at 330-688-0888 if you have any questions we can answer for you.

1. When will my child get his/her first tooth? Teeth vary in shape, size, and location in the mouth. These variations help with chewing, speaking, and provide facial shape. Most children have 20 primary (baby teeth) which usually begin to erupt at about 6 months of age.

2. Are baby teeth really that important to my child? Primary, or "baby," teeth are important for many reasons. Not only do they help children speak clearly and chew naturally, they also aid in forming a path that permanent teeth can follow when they are ready to erupt.

3. When will my child lose his/her first tooth? Children will usually begin to lose teeth when they are about 6 years old. Under normal conditions, the average age when all primary teeth are gone is 12.

4. When should I begin cleaning my child's teeth? Once your child's teeth begin erupting, you can begin cleaning them by wiping them with a moist washcloth. As your child gets more teeth, you can begin to use a soft child's toothbrush. You should use just a pea-size amount of a fluoride toothpaste or a non-fluoride toothpaste (like Baby OraGel) until your child is able to spit it out (too much fluoride can stain their teeth).

5. Does my child need Sealants? Sealants are usually applied to the back teeth to help protect the grooves and pits of these teeth that can be hard to clean and are prone to developing cavities. A sealant is a plastic material that is applied to the teeth, hardens, and provides a barrier against plaque and other harmful substances. Sealants should be applied to the 1st and 2nd permanent molars and appropriate premolars as soon as possible after they erupt (usually after 6 years of age).

6. When is it time for my child to get his/her wisdom teeth removed?  This age can vary based on  a lot of circumstances but we do monitor this during routine exams and X-rays to determine when it is the best time for removal or if they need removed at all.  Most oral surgeries can be performed by our dentists.
